A retaining wall carries the weight of the earth behind it, and of the water that soaks into it. It is sized for that pressure, and drained so that water never builds up behind it.

Good to know
Most retaining walls that fail do so because of water, not weight. Drainage is never an option in our quotes.
For a wall higher than about a metre and a half, or next to a building, we have it calculated by an engineering office before quoting.
